In this chapter, the authors pursue the goal of looking at intimacy and proximity from a cultural standpoint. Popular perceptions commonly associate a cultural perspective with research on cultural diversity. The authors’ objective, however, is not to show how closeness and intimacy differ among cultures.

Instead, their purpose is to provide light on a broader process that is often overlooked in popular accounts: the extent to which observable patterns of closeness and intimacy are not “simply natural,” but rather are embedded in certain cultural environments.
