Hofer, G., Macher, S., & Neubauer, A. C. (2022). Love is not blind: What romantic partners know about our abilities compared to ourselves, our close friends, and our acquaintances. Journal of Research in Personality, 98, 104211.
Compared to ourselves, how much do our partners, close friends, and acquaintances know about our abilities? The purpose of this registered report was to study inequalities in different views’ understanding of an individual’s linguistic, numerical, and spatial intelligence, creativity, and intrapersonal and interpersonal emotional capacities. 238 targets provided self-evaluations and performance measurements of these abilities. The abilities of each target were also appraised by their significant other, a close friend, and an acquaintance. Results revealed knowledge asymmetries as well as perspective similarities. Individuals were at least moderately accurate in each of the six domains. However, partners’ accuracy was comparable, and both partners and friends were able to provide unique insights into particular abilities. We examine these findings in relation to Vazire’s paradigm of self-other knowledge asymmetry.
