The authors present an overview of the state and visibility of popular romance in Sweden, a country where the genre has been more or less invisible until recent years. Then, they reflect and discuss their experiences of teaching popular romance in Sweden. They describe their experiences of planning and modifying a course on romance. The authors talk about their projects supplying textbooks for students. They also discuss both the challenges and rewards they have encountered when teaching this course.

Maria Nilson is an associate professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Linnæus University. She focuses her research and teaching primarily on popular fiction and young adult novels. She has published articles on erotic romance, paranormal romance, chick lit, young adult dystopia, and steampunk.
Helene Ehriander is associate professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Linnæus University. She has published articles on chick lit and Astrid Lindgren’s books for girls. She is still engaged in writing about Astrid Lindgren.
